How Wim’s Digital Playground Came to Be

Some things come into existence because you plan them in advance.

Others simply develop along the way.

For me, Wim’s Digital Playground belongs to that second group.

It did not begin with a plan to build a large website. It started much smaller, during a period when my life had changed considerably.

A Different Period in My Life

After my stroke, many things changed.

Things that once came naturally suddenly required more time and energy. Recovery became an important part of my everyday life.

Yet one thing remained the same: my interest in technology.

Computers, servers, networks and figuring out technical problems had always been things I enjoyed. During my recovery, I discovered that this curiosity was still there.

In fact, technology gave me something to look forward to.

A problem to think about.

A system to build on.

A project to move forward, one step at a time.

From an Idea to a Website

At some point, the idea came to me to document my experiences somewhere.

Not just my story about recovery, but also the technical things I was working on.

My homelab.

Servers.

Networks.

Linux.

WordPress.

Open-source software.

And, above all, the things that did not go right straight away.

Because that is often where you learn the most.

Little by little, the website began to take shape.

Why a Digital Playground?

I did not want to create a technical website filled only with settings and specifications.

I wanted a place where I could experiment.

Where a project could grow.

Where things could occasionally go wrong.

And where I could look back later at what I had done and why I had made certain choices.

That is why Wim’s Digital Playground fits so well with what I want this website to be.

A place where I can build, learn, test and try again.

Not everything has to be decided in advance.

Recovery and Technology Belong Together

Combining a story about recovery with servers, networks and computers might seem unusual.

To me, it feels completely natural.

During my recovery, I rediscovered how much enjoyment I get from technology.

When I work on my homelab, I am not just working with computers.

I am learning.

I am thinking things through.

I am building something.

And sometimes, I am simply curious about why something does not work.

It gives me structure and something to look forward to.

My Story Is Also About Building Again

My life changed because of a stroke, but my curiosity and passion for technology have remained. During my recovery, I started building again with the things that were still part of me.

You can read more about my recovery and personal story on my [My Story] page.

Not Starting Again from Zero

I do not see my recovery as starting again from zero.

I bring a great deal with me from my life before the stroke: my experience, my knowledge and, above all, my passion for technology.

That is what I am building on now.

Step by step.

The Website Grew Alongside Me

At first, the main idea was to share my story.

Then technical topics were added.

After that came projects.

Then my homelab.

And more and more things I encountered along the way.

As a result, the website evolved alongside my own development.

It is still a work in progress.

And that is perfectly fine with me.

There will be new ideas.

New projects.

New technical challenges.

And probably plenty of moments when I need to figure something out again.

That is part of the whole experience.

Wim’s Digital Playground Is Also a Memory Aid

There is another practical reason why I document the things I do.

During my recovery, I have noticed that I cannot always remember everything as easily as I used to.

That is why I find it helpful to write things down.

Not just for visitors, but for myself as well.

A configuration.

A solution to a problem.

A project I have completed.

Or simply something I have spent a lot of time working on.

When I need it again later, I can look it up.

That gives me peace of mind.

And it prevents me from having to start all over again every time.

A Place to Keep Learning

Wim’s Digital Playground has become more than just a website.

It is a place where my personal story and my interest in technology come together.

A place where I can write about my recovery.

But also about putting a server back into use.

Changing a network.

Trying out a Linux system.

Or finally finding a solution to a problem.

It does not all have to be a big achievement.

Sometimes, a small discovery is enough.

And the Playground Keeps Changing

I do not know exactly what the website will look like a year from now.

Perhaps it will feature new projects that I have not even thought of yet.

Perhaps my homelab will have changed again.

Perhaps I will have learned new things.

And perhaps there will be topics I have not even considered.

I actually like that idea.

A digital playground does not have to be finished.

You keep building, learning and trying new things.

Why I Share This

With my website, I mainly want to show that even after a major change in life, there can still be room for new things.

My recovery is not the same every day.

Sometimes I move forward.

Sometimes I need to take a step back.

And sometimes a quiet day is exactly what I need.

Meanwhile, I continue doing things I enjoy.

Technology.

My homelab.

My website.

New projects.

And always something new to learn.

That is how Wim’s Digital Playground came into being.

A place where I can share my experiences, keep learning and continue building in my own way.

Not everything at once.

Not perfectly.

But step by step.

What You Can Expect to Find Here

In the coming months, I will continue writing about a variety of subjects.

About my recovery.

About my homelab.

About servers, networks and open-source software.

About the projects I am working on.

And, of course, about the things that go wrong along the way.

Because that is part of it too.

Perhaps you have a technical experience, an idea or a different perspective on something I write about.

Feel free to let me know. I enjoy sharing experiences and ideas.

And I do not feel the need to do everything faster.

I am simply glad that I can build, learn and remain curious.

Sometimes, it is enough to keep moving forward calmly and see where the next step takes you.
