What Is a Home Server? Discover What You Can Do With One

My homelab is more than just a collection of computers and network equipment. It is my own digital playground, where I can explore technology, try things out and, most importantly, keep learning.

By working with servers, networks and software myself, I gradually learn more about how everything works together. Sometimes something works straight away. Other times, I need to investigate why it does not work as expected. I learn from those experiences too.

In this article, I explain what a home server is, what you can use it for and how I use my own server to expand my knowledge of technology.

What Is a Home Server?

A home server is a computer that provides services to other devices on your network.

It can be an ordinary computer, but it can also be a dedicated server like my Dell PowerEdge R415, which I named ANNA.

ANNA runs Proxmox VE. This allows me to run different virtual machines and containers on one physical server.

For me, this is a great way to learn. I can install different systems, explore their settings and discover what is possible. I want to understand not only how to configure something, but also why certain settings are needed.

What Can You Do With a Home Server?

What you can do with a home server depends on your interests and what you want to learn.

For example, you can use one to store files centrally, run different operating systems or test new software. You can also use it to learn about networking, security and system administration.

In my homelab, several areas of technology come together. I work with virtualisation, servers, networking and security. By configuring these components myself, I learn how they interact.

That is what makes it interesting to me. When you build something yourself, you come across questions you might never have thought about otherwise. By investigating those questions, I continue to expand my knowledge.

What Equipment Do You Need?

You do not need a large server to get started.

A computer you no longer use every day might already be suitable. The equipment you need depends on what you want to do with it.

I use a Dell PowerEdge R415. It allows me to run different systems and experiment with many things in my homelab.

However, the equipment itself is not the most important part for me. It is what I can learn from using it. You can start small, learn to understand one application and then build on that experience.

That way, both your homelab and your knowledge can grow.

What Is the Difference Between a Home Server and a NAS?

A NAS is primarily designed to make files available over a network. You can use it to store documents and photos and access them from different devices.

A home server can do that too, but it can also run other applications. For example, you can use virtual machines to test different operating systems.

The two are not completely separate categories. Some NAS devices can run additional software, while a home server can also be configured for storage.

The main difference is what you want to use the system for.

My Own Homelab: Building to Learn

I use Proxmox VE on my Dell PowerEdge R415, ANNA, as part of my homelab.

Proxmox allows me to manage virtual machines and containers. This means I can run different systems alongside each other and experiment with them.

My setup also includes different parts of my network, including a Sophos firewall. This is another area I continue to develop and learn about.

I want to do more than simply follow instructions and copy settings. I want to understand what I am doing and why I configure something in a particular way.

Things do not always work straight away. Sometimes I need to look for information, review a configuration or try a different approach. For me, that is part of the learning process.

My homelab does not have to be finished all at once. I can add something new, improve existing components and continue expanding my knowledge.

That combination of technology, curiosity and continuous learning is what makes my homelab so interesting to me.

Is a Home Server Right for You?

A home server might be interesting if you want to learn more about computers, servers and networks. You can experiment, discover new software and see for yourself how different systems work together.

You do not need lots of equipment or all the answers before you begin. You can start with a small project and build on it from there.

Keep in mind that a home server also needs maintenance. Updates, security and backups are important parts of running one. Working with these aspects yourself can help you understand why they matter.

For me, a homelab is a way to keep my curiosity about technology alive and continue developing my skills. Every step gives me something new to understand or try.
