Why Good Storage and Backups Are Important in My Homelab
Building a homelab is not just about servers, virtualisation and technology for me. In the end, it all comes down to one thing: my data.
You can build a great environment, but if you lose important files, it is not worth much in the end. That is why I have been thinking more and more about storage and backups. Not just when something goes wrong, but beforehand.
My Data Is More Important Than the Hardware
Hardware can be replaced.
A server can fail. A hard drive can stop working. An installation can go wrong, and sometimes you even have to start again.
That is frustrating, but it can usually be fixed.
Data is different.
Photos, documents, configurations and other files you collect over the years cannot simply be recreated. That is why I now consider reliable storage one of the most important parts of my homelab.
Room to Grow
When I started looking at my storage again, I did not just want to consider how much space I needed today.
I especially wanted to think about the future.
My homelab continues to develop, and naturally, that means more data. New projects, backups, virtual machines and other files all require storage space.
That is why I think it is important to have a storage solution that is scalable and easy to expand.
I do not want to have to start all over again every time my storage fills up. To me, it makes much more sense to build a foundation that can grow along with my homelab.
Backups Are Not a Luxury
Making a backup is easy to put off.
You quickly find yourself thinking: I will do that tomorrow.
Until something goes wrong.
That is why I try to make backups a regular part of my homelab. Not because I expect something to break, but because I know it can always happen.
Above all, a backup gives me peace of mind.
If something goes wrong with a server or a virtual machine, I do not want to have to rebuild everything from scratch. I want to be able to return to an earlier state and continue from there.
Why Backups Are Extra Important to Me
For me, a good backup has taken on an additional meaning.
Since my stroke, I have noticed that my memory does not always work the way I want it to. Sometimes I forget things that I used to remember. This also means that I do not always remember exactly which steps I took before or how I configured something.
That is why I do not want to rely on my memory alone.
If I need to reinstall something or something goes wrong with my homelab, I want to be able to fall back on a good backup. That way, I do not have to work everything out from memory again.
That gives me peace of mind.
I can work calmly, one step at a time, knowing that if something goes wrong, I have a way back.
For me, a backup is therefore more than just a technical safeguard. It also gives me a sense of security and peace of mind during my recovery.
That is why I now try to organise my homelab so that I do not have to remember everything. Good documentation, a clear overview and backups all help me with that.
My Most Important Lesson
In the end, a homelab is not just about technology.
For me, it is also about security and peace of mind. Especially now that, since my stroke, I have noticed that my memory is sometimes less reliable than it used to be.
I want to be able to experiment, make mistakes and rebuild things without worrying about losing important data.
That is why good storage and backups are so important to me.
Not because I expect something to go wrong, but because I want to be prepared if it does.
